I went to Kroger Monday after going to work and school to run an errand and pick up a few things in preparation for the Thanksgiving meal. What I didn't expect was to be reminded of the little blessings in life that make life worth living and going on.
In the career I have chosen, it is easy sometimes to just see the dark side of human nature, without ever being reminded of the good. Though there are times everyday that the juveniles have brightened the atmosphere, there is only so much they can do to erase the fact that we are all in kiddie jail and that a riot cold happen at any moment, for any reason. I was reminded of this fact Tuesday during a teacher meeting where my supervisor told us the best we can do is to tell our family we loved them before we leave for work, and then say a prayer on the way in. It was a sober reminded of the reality of the work I have chosen. And sometimes those reminders can kickout the hope, joy and light that the rest of the 'outside' world holds dear.
So this past Monday I was thankful for the sight of a little blessing. That sight was of a 1 year old little girl in a grocery cart. The smile on her face as she made her little 5 year old brother run around her, catching whatever she threw out of the cart. They were adorable. Sweet. Young. Children. Children untainted by the unfairness life will eventually throw their way. Untainted by crime. Fear. Hate. War. Children who love because that is all they know to do. The sight of these kids reminded me of the hope for my kids at RYDC. They all, at some point, we're just like these children. Even now, despite their criminal backgrounds, they are still 'innocent' children. They need guidance, whether they take it or not. But the main things that struck me by the sight of these little children was the fac that I NEEDED to be reminded of the sweeter, simpler things in life.
Life this past year has been hard but blessed, which leaves me thankful for many things. I am thankful the war between my parents is finally over and we have a sense of security- a home, a vehicle, both of which my mom and I will not lose. I became my schools GOAL representative because my Sgt., college and community believed in me more than I ever did. I have met many new friends this year, who went from strangers one day to kindred spirits the next. I am grateful for a home that is warm, food that is plentiful, friends that are many, a mom who cares and a job that I am proud of. I am thankful for the little things in life that remind me to be thankful.
I might be rambling today, but today is thanksgiving. And no matter the trials and troubles we have each had this year, look around for the blessings you have! Remember to give thanks in all things, and remember your Creator who gives you these Beauitful and bountiful blessings in life. I'm off for the day folks, it's Thanksgvng. And it's time for turkey. (another blessing I'm thankful for.)
