An awesome moment happened on our last day of outreach on the harbor in Hong Kong. While our team leader was giving the gospel, the rest of us dispersed into the crowd in case anyone wanted to talk or ask questions. I was standing near a young man at the front of the crowd when one of our translators turned to him and spoke in Cantonese. He told her he could speak English, and him and I began a conversation. His name was Leo. Leo is a Chinese student who is currently working on his Masters Degree in Philosophy. In Asain countries like China and Hong Kong, the public education system is highly policed and for a person to make it to university is a miracle in itself, much less obtain a Masters degree. This would make Leo VERY intelligient.
After we spoke for a short time, I asked him what he believed. Leo told me that he was not sure, and that at the moment, he did not believe in anything. We talked about the fact of at the end of every philosophical debate and discussion, there is never any answers. Opinions, ideas and theories, but ever any cold, hard facts that we can stand on. I told him that Jesus Christ IS a fact. He is the Beginning and the End- the Answer to the Question. Leo did not know too much about Jesus, but he did own a Bible. I asked him to go home and study it like he does the other philosophies and theories, and while he studied, to ask God to reveal Himself to Leo. Leo smiled and said he would, and allowed to pray for him before he left.
The amazing thing was the fact that I love philosophy. One of my courses I took last year was ethics, and included several philosophers and study of them and their theories. This course was my favorite! However, it did mess with my mind, because there were never any answers. I could identify with this young man through my little bit of knowledge for a subject I adored. This is by far one of my favorite moments of outreach, because I know the Lord will touch Leo's heart, if Leo allows Him to.
