By far one of the greatest moments at my school was this past Thursday night. We were having a college after hours social and had invited a couple of the local high school bands and ROTC squads. We had a disc jockey and every program of study offered at the college was represented by a booth, it's advisor and a few of the students. Our academic offerings were also being showcased, such as clubs and organizations.
So sometimes the best things in life are the little things, the unexpected things. Such as the best moment. My advisor, a former Sgt. of the state troopers and one of the strongest women I know personally, is known for her love of putting spice in life. She is loved and adored by all her students. It was Sgt. Jaki that helped me continue on and pursue an associates degree rather than a diploma, and to inspire me to also desire and go after a masters degree asap. If it was not for Sgt. Jaki, I do not know if I would have made it through my first few quarters without quitting out of fear that I would not be able to make it in the world of Criminal Justice. She had faith that I could make it when I had no idea of my own talent and goals. I think she only got nervous once when I asked to intern at RYDC. But she supported me nonetheless and encouraged me no matter what. Sgt. was willing to put herself out there to recammend me as the number one student in the school and the state~ and even though I didn't win the state competition, I could feel that she was proud of me anyways. And that made all the difference in my college education and my passion to do well.
Anyways! The best moment~ the DJ turned on the music while the students and staff were setting up for the social event, and the Cupid Shuffle came on. Sgt. Jaki is not known for being shy (neither are her students) and next thing I know she is out there in the parking lot doing the Cupid Shuffle! It has been awhile since I danced it, despite it being one of my favorite dance songs, so I jumped out there and grabbed some friends (some of whom would NOT participate, but they did videotape the spectacle). I never had so much fun at school! We were laughing, dancing, sliding and having the time of our lives. I later requested the Ch Cha Slide and for the Cupid Shuffle to be played again, to which I am grateful they honored my request! The parking lot became more populated with people willing to jump in. I learned a new dance that Sgt. Jaki taught us and though it was not my speciality (I don't 'wobble' as good as I Cha Cha and slide) it couldn't have gotten much better. I wish that some of my other friends had been there to enjoy the night and blessing of having fun, enjoying laughing and dancing.
While the school year, and my current education, is ending, I can't help but be thankful for the experiences I've had. I know that as I go on to pursue and further develop my education that I will have many more fun-filled memories. But I don't think I'll ever forget dancing in the parking lot with my advisor, staff and students at my last college after hours as a student ambassador, the GOAL representative and as SGT. Jaki's student. And though this sounds like a farewell to arms, it really is not. I am far from finished, and there are many more stories till the end of the year to tell!
